Interview with Conference Keynote Robert Talisse Published in Jutarnji list

Ahead of the international conference The Challenges of Hostile Epistemology, our doctoral researcher Hana Samaržija conducted an interview with Robert Talisse, professor of philosophy and political science at Vanderbilt University and one of the conference’s keynote speakers.

The interview explores Talisse’s work on democracy, political disagreement, pluralism, and contemporary political culture. Particular attention is given to the challenges posed by polarization and the conditions required for productive democratic reflection and disagreement. Talisse also discusses ideas developed in his recent work on civic solitude, including the importance of creating spaces for distance and reflection within democratic life.

The interview was published in the Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji list in connection with Talisse’s visit to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, for the conference held on 18–19 June 2026. It provided a wider public audience with an introduction to the philosophical questions at the heart of Talisse’s research and to the themes addressed during his keynote lecture, The Real Problem of Civility.
